Layer Window Treatments: 5 Important Steps

If you’d love to layer window treatments, we’re here with a step-by-step guide! The process of choosing design elements can seem overwhelming while considering the end result. But, we break it down for you to see just how simple it can be!

Step One: Start with Function.

It can be important to determine the function of the space. This is where the “base shade” comes in. The window covering on the window will be one of the first decisions you’ll make, as it provides light control, privacy, glare reduction, view-through and more!

The lifestyle improvements you experience will vary, depending on the product you choose. This is why deciding which benefits you’d like–according to the function of the space–is the first important choice you’ll make! When you know the function of the room, it also helps you decide how to layer window treatments. Will you choose side drapery panels that stay in one place, or full draperies that adjust when needed?

Step Two: Choose Fabrics.

Fabrics add style and softness to the look of a room. And, this is one of the most exciting parts of this process–choosing the fabrics creates a personalized look! You’ll be determining the atmosphere and design style you’re trying to achieve–don’t get overwhelmed! Remember, we are here to guide you.

Because choosing fabrics is a personal choice, here are some questions to get you thinking about the style and tone you’d like to set as you layer window treatments…

Would you like it to be casual or formal?

Do you love patterned fabrics or solids?

Is the color scheme neutral, bold or somewhere in-between?

Will the fabrics play a role in function, or are they there for style only?

Step Three: Identify the Header Style.

The header style is how the drapery is finished at the top, connecting to the hardware. While there are many ways to create a personalized look, as you begin the process, it’s more important to choose an “overall” look. We’ll guide you further from there! There are three basic styles to choose from. Rod pocket is probably the most traditional, lending itself to a more casual appearance, depending on the fabric. Grommets create more of a formal look, as the metals coordinate with the design. Another popular choice, pinch pleat gathers the fabric. Because of this, drapery rings attach the draperies to the rod. Once again, fabric selection plays a large role as you layer window treatments.

Step Four: Make Hardware Selections.

More and more, the design world is featuring drapery hardware. You’ll want to determine if the hardware should match the other elements in your home, or stand out as a coordinating statement.

Step Five: Determine Length.

How long should drapes be? A commonly asked question, it’s important to consider that drapery rods installed above the window frame heighten the look of the room. Drapes extend downward, either stopping right at floor length, or continuing a few extra inches. We call this “puddling.” The fabric rests on the floor for a dramatic look.
